Keeping the oil clean is paramount in reliable operation of rotating equipment. A large turbine in a power plant consists of several tons of steel with a main bearing shaft that rotates at several thousand rpm and is supported by plain bearings on a cushion of turbine oil that is just a few microns in film thickness — thinner than a human hair. If an abrasive particulate, not even visible to the naked eye, finds its way into the oil and gets lodged, it can result in premature bearing wear, which can result in expensive repairs and potentially forced turbine outage.

Such events are very costly to the power plant owners. Lost revenue for a large turbine at seasonal peaks can be more than one million dollars per day.
